The husband likes eating beef, but I really don’t like cooking beef, apart from making steak or stew. Whenever he bought some beef over at the butcher’s, I would scratch my head and then I would be cooking the same thing that I always do.

Anyway, this is something new. I tried cooking it this way, and surprisingly, it was not bad. At least the husband thinks so, so good lah kan. Pumpkin would not eat this since she was too young when I made it, and she did not (still don’t) like eating beef.

DAGING GORENG KICAP PEDAS

Ingredients

  • 500 g beef, sliced

Ground finely

  • 2 stalks lemongrass
  • 2 inch ginger
  • 3 shallots
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • Some water (probably around 1/4 of a cup)
  • 2 TB heaped chilli powder
  • 1/2 cup sweet soy sauce
  • 4 TB oil

Method

  1. First boil the sliced beef. In a pot, add water to cover the beef. Simmer on low, adding more water if the broth dries out, making sure the lid is on. Cook for about 40 minutes until the beef is tender. The broth could be used in other dishes, too.
  2. Saute the grounded ingredients with the chilli powder. Cook it on low, until the oil separates. This would probably take around 15 minutes.
  3. When the oil separates, add the beef. Continue cooking on medium low, adding some broth if the gravy is too thick.
  4. Then add the soy sauce. Stir to mix, adjust seasoning, then take off heat.

Good served with plain white rice.
